Rathdrum is located on the Rathdrum Prairie at an elevation of 2,211 feet (674 m) above sea level. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.95 square miles (12.82 km2), all land. Rathdrum is situated at the base of Rathdrum Mountain, which is part of the Selkirk Mountain Range.
